Welcome Home This sculpture is one of my most personal works. It’s a portrait of my mother, Mickey, a true “earth mother” in every sense. She always nurtured my creativity, giving me both the freedom and support to follow my artistic instincts. Sadly, she passed away when I was in my twenties, at the far-too-young age of 54. In creating this piece, I wanted to capture both her essence and impact of her loss. The portrait is layered with symbolism: the malformed breasts signify the destructive force of cancer (though her battle was with ovarian). I used the body as a metaphor for the disease that claimed her life. The heart in her hand represents her warmth, generosity, and the unconditional acceptance she extended to everyone she met. The single eye is a nod to her ever-present camera, a lens that came to symbolize not only her creativity but also her intuition, humor, and joie de vivre—all qualities I carry with me and strive to honor through my own work. 60” x 48” x 5” - ceramic, smalti, dinnerware, handmade pottery, hand-pulled filati, pyrite, a painted stone, and lots of love $10,000 |
