Mix n’Match - Smalti & Picassiette Portraiture ala Spilimbergo In this 4-day class, students will create a portrait of their choice. Gila will share her extensive knowledge about creating mosaic portraits, with an emphasis on combining picassiette elements (dishes, saucers, etc) with Mexican smalti. You may also choose to incorporate additional materials such as stone, marble and found objects. We'll use a laying technique that Gila learned at the Mosaic School in Spilembergo Italy, with her own modified picassiette twist. Gila will demonstrations how to use hand tools to cut & shape each material, and provide a multitude of tips on using these materials in combination, to create texture & interest within your mosaic work. Each participant will receive individual attention & guidance while working on their own unique portrait. Since individuals work at different paces, not everyone is expected to finish their portrait in this short workshop. However, Gila will demonstrate the finishing process as well as discuss an individual plan for completion with each student before the end of the workshop. Participants will leave the workshop with a good understanding of choosing a subject, preparing a design, understanding value, cutting material & setting them into a mortar bed, and much more. Everyone is encouraged to bring an item or three (dishes, pottery, teacups, etc), which contain designs or patterns to enhance & personalize their chosen subject. Thrift stores & yard sales are perfect, inexpensive sources for finding these materials. This course is for intermediate/advanced students & not intended as an introduction to mosaic. |
