"An instructor that comes immediately to mind is Gila Rayberg. Her way of seeing possibilities in dishes opens up a completely new way of thinking, plus some pretty valuable tips, techniques, and habits.
She's also so giving and fun in a workshop." ~ Lesa

NEW Workshop!
Mosaic Portraiture - MiXeD MaTeRiaLs In this workshop, I share all I know about creating mosaic portraits using a variety of materials. You will learn to cut, shape & blend stained glass, smalti, ceramic, dishes and other materials into a cohesive portrait. I will demonstrate the usage of various hand tools and provide tips on using multiple materials in combination to bring texture & interest to your portrait. Each participant will receive individual attention & guidance from me, while working on their chosen portrait. Understanding that individuals works at a different paces, students are not expected to finish their portrait in a 3 day workshop, though some may do so. I will discuss a plan with each student on how to complete their unfinished works at home. By the end of the workshop, students will have gained a good understanding of the process of choosing a subject, transferring a design, understanding value, laying materials of varied thicknesses, creating likeness, and much more. Everyone is encouraged to bring some of their own unique materials (dishes, glass, found objects) to incorporate into and personalize their works. |
Picassiette Portraiture In this 3-day class, students will work on a portrait (human or animal) of their choice. I will share my extensive knowledge about creating mosaic portraits, with an emphasis on picassiette; cutting, shaping & incorporating dishes and pottery into mosaics. There will be demonstrations on how to use hand tools to cut & shape picassiette materials, and tips on using these materials to add texture & interest to your portrait. Each participant will receive individual attention & guidance while working on their own unique portrait Since individuals work at different paces, students are not expected to finish their portrait in a 3-day workshop. I will discuss a plan with each student on how to complete their works at home. Participants will leave the workshop with a good understanding of choosing a subject, transferring a design to substrate, understanding value, laying materials of varied thicknesses, creating likeness, and much more. Everyone is encouraged to bring some of their own unique finds (dishes, pottery, teacups, etc) to incorporate into and personalize their works. Thrift stores & yard sales finds are perfect, as is clearing out cabinets of chipped, cracked dishes, and those broken bits that you can’t bear to throw away, but would love to incorporated into your art! Bringing extra to share ensures that there will be unique and surprising selections for all. |
Once students are registered, for either course, they will receive a letter from me with detailed instructions on selecting an appropriate portrait reference for the workshop.
